Morning Commute Overview for Monday, 9 March 2026

Commuters heading into the Sydney CBD this morning can expect relatively stable conditions across the major road networks following a weekend of intensive work on the Warringah Freeway. However, as we begin the work week, several significant nightly disruptions are scheduled to commence this evening across the public transport network. Passengers and motorists are advised to plan their return journeys early to avoid delays.

Public Transport Alerts: Metro and Light Rail

Starting tonight, Monday, 9 March, two major components of the Sydney transport network will see reduced service or closures for essential maintenance and testing:

  • Sydney Metro M1: From 9:10 PM tonight through Wednesday, metro services between Tallawong and Sydenham will run at a reduced frequency of every 20 minutes. This is due to critical testing as the Southwest Metro extension prepares for its second-half 2026 opening. At Victoria Cross and Crows Nest, services heading toward Tallawong may depart from different platforms.
  • L2 Randwick and L3 Kingsford Light Rail: Nightly full closures will take effect from 9:00 PM until 1:00 AM, starting tonight and running through Wednesday. No light rail services will operate on these lines during these hours to allow for planned trackwork and maintenance. Commuters should utilize local bus alternatives during this period.
  • Southwest Link: The free Southwest Link buses continue to provide high-frequency service for those affected by the ongoing Bankstown line conversion, which remains on track for completion later this year.

Major Roadworks and Motorway Updates

While morning peak hour traffic is expected to follow typical patterns, long-term infrastructure projects continue to influence lane configurations and speed limits:

  • Warringah Freeway Upgrade: Following a series of weekend closures in North Sydney and Neutral Bay, all lanes have reopened for the morning peak. However, motorists should remain alert for changed traffic conditions and temporary barriers as surface work continues near Miller Street and the Falcon Street intersection.
  • Western Harbour Tunnel (WHT): Nightly transport of heavy Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) components is ongoing through March. Motorists using the City West Link at Rozelle during late-night hours may encounter brief stoppages or slow-moving oversized vehicles.
  • Kogarah Surface Works: Activity remains high around President Avenue and the Princes Highway as crews finalize surface roadworks and pedestrian bridges associated with the M6 Stage 1 project. Standard construction hours (7:00 AM – 6:00 PM) apply, so expect heavy vehicle movements in the area.

Commuter Advice

With the first major nightly maintenance block for March beginning today, we recommend checking real-time apps before 9:00 PM to ensure your trip home is not impacted by the reduced Metro frequency or Light Rail closures. Drive safely and allow extra time if navigating construction zones in North Sydney or Kogarah.
