Sydney Traffic and Transport Update: Tuesday, 17 March 2026

Good morning, Sydney. Commuters are advised to prepare for several significant changes to the road and rail network this Tuesday. With St. Patrick’s Day celebrations continuing in the CBD and major infrastructure maintenance beginning today, planning your route ahead of time is highly recommended.

Major Roadworks and Arterial Changes

  • James Ruse Drive, Rosehill: Starting tonight, Tuesday 17 March, bridge maintenance work will result in changed overnight traffic conditions. Drivers should expect lane closures and reduced speed limits in the area between 8:00 PM and 5:00 AM.
  • Great Western Highway (Victoria Pass): A critical reminder for Western Sydney and Blue Mountains commuters: the Great Western Highway remains closed in both directions at Victoria Pass for urgent structural repairs. This closure is expected to last for several months. Light vehicles are being detoured via Main Street, Chifley Road, and the Darling Causeway. Heavy vehicle operators should check permit requirements as some restrictions apply to the detour route.
  • Mamre Road, St Marys: Following the closure that began yesterday, the intersection of McIntyre Avenue and Mamre Road remains shut. This is part of a nine-month project to upgrade the corridor. Local detours are in place, but significant delays are expected during peak hours.
  • Picton Road: Traffic changes are also scheduled to commence today at the Hume Motorway intersection near Wilton for essential maintenance.

Public Transport and Special Events

Public transport is the best option for those heading into the city for St. Patrick’s Day festivities. While the main parade concluded over the weekend, local celebrations in The Rocks and near Circular Quay will continue today. Expect George Street to be busier than usual near the historic precinct.

  • Sydney Metro Southwest: The Bankstown Line conversion continues, with rail replacement buses operating between Sydenham and Bankstown. Commuters are encouraged to use the Trip Planner for updated bus schedules as the Metro Southwest opening remains slated for later this year.
  • Sydney FC v Melbourne City: For those heading to Allianz Stadium tonight for the A-League Men’s clash, remember that travel on public transport is included in your match ticket. Extra light rail services will run between Central and Moore Park.
  • Blue Mountains Line: Due to the Victoria Pass closure, free turn-up-and-go shuttle coaches are operating daily between Bathurst and Katoomba to assist regional travelers.

Stay safe on the roads today and allow extra travel time if you are passing through the Rosehill or Blue Mountains corridors.
