Sydney City Roundup: Health Alerts, Transport Maintenance, and Public Service Notices for Friday, 13 March 2026
Public Health Advisory: Community Measles Alert
NSW Health has issued an urgent public health alert following the confirmation of two new measles cases in the Sydney metropolitan area this week. With 26 cases recorded in the state since January, health officials advise that the virus is likely circulating within the community. One of the recent cases was acquired locally from an unknown source, increasing the risk of exposure for residents in the Sydney CBD and Western Sydney.
Symptoms typically include fever, sore eyes, a runny nose, and a cough, followed several days later by a red, blotchy rash. Residents who attended potential exposure sites or show symptoms are urged to call ahead to their GP or emergency department before arriving to prevent further spread. High-risk individuals, including pregnant women and those with weakened immune systems, should contact their local Public Health Unit immediately if they suspect exposure.
Transport and Road Closure Notices
Motorists are advised of several significant traffic disruptions scheduled for Friday night, 13 March, and the following morning:
- Sydney Harbour Bridge: Five lanes will be closed for essential maintenance from 9:30 pm on Friday, 13 March, until 5:00 am on Saturday. Drivers should utilize the Sydney Harbour Tunnel as an alternative or allow for significant delays.
- Harbour Street: Northbound lanes from Bathurst Street remain closed nightly between 9:00 pm and 5:00 am as part of ongoing infrastructure works. Detours are in place via Bathurst and Kent Streets.
- Lakemba Nights: In observance of Ramadan, Haldon Street and The Boulevarde will be closed to all vehicle traffic from 4:00 pm Friday until 4:30 am Saturday. Heavy pedestrian activity is expected in the Lakemba area.
Major Event Traffic: Moore Park NRL Schedule
Commuters should prepare for heavy traffic and modified parking conditions in Moore Park on Friday evening. Allianz Stadium will host the NRL clash between the Roosters and the Rabbitohs. Special event clearways will be in effect on Moore Park Road and Anzac Parade from 3:00 pm. Ticketholders are reminded that travel on public transport is included in their match tickets, and the use of the L2 and L3 Light Rail lines is highly recommended to alleviate congestion.
Park Maintenance and Closures
The NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) confirms that "The Leap" area of Kamay Botany Bay National Park concludes its scheduled track maintenance on Friday, 13 March. While the area is expected to reopen over the weekend, visitors on Friday should still observe all safety signage and avoid cordoned-off tracks. Additionally, the Showground Trail remains closed for maintenance through late March.
Public Service: NSW Seniors Festival
The City of Sydney continues to host various events as part of the 2026 Seniors Festival. Public facilities, including select community centres and libraries, are hosting free workshops and social gatherings through Sunday, 15 March. Residents are encouraged to check local council bulletin boards for specific venue times and accessibility details.
