Public Notice: Sydney Essential Service Alerts and Road Closures

Official Health Advisory: Measles Alert for Western Sydney and CBD
NSW Health has issued an urgent public health alert following confirmed cases of measles circulating within the community. As of March 8, 2026, residents in Western Sydney, the Inner West, and the Sydney CBD are advised to monitor for symptoms after several individuals were found to have been infectious while visiting public locations. Symptoms include fever, sore eyes, a cough, and a runny nose, typically followed by a blotchy red rash. Health authorities indicate that because the source of some infections remains unknown, there is a high likelihood of ongoing community transmission. Anyone who is unsure of their vaccination status is encouraged to consult a GP for the MMR vaccine, which is provided free for those eligible.
Public Transport: Metro M1 Line Closure
Commuters are advised that a full line closure is in effect for the Sydney Metro M1 line on Sunday, 8 March 2026. No metro services will operate between Tallawong and Sydenham. This scheduled outage is required for essential systems testing and integration works as part of the metro extension project. To assist passengers, replacement buses will be operating frequently between Tallawong and Chatswood. For travel between Chatswood, the CBD, and Sydenham, passengers should use existing Sydney Trains services. Please allow for an additional 30 to 45 minutes of travel time when planning your journey.
Temporary Road Closure: Goulburn Street
A significant road closure is currently active on Goulburn Street in the Haymarket district to facilitate essential construction activity. Goulburn Street is closed to all vehicle traffic between Pitt Street and Sussex Street. This closure commenced at 10:00 pm on Saturday and will remain in place until 5:00 am on Monday, 9 March. Traffic controllers are stationed at the intersections of Pitt, George, and Sussex Streets to manage pedestrian safety and local vehicle access. Motorists are encouraged to use Hay Street or Liverpool Street as alternative east-west routes.
Community Notice: Major Events and Crowd Management
The City of Sydney advises of high pedestrian activity and localized diversions in the following precincts today:
- Darling Harbour: The Holi Festival of Colours continues at Tumbalong Park from 11:00 am to 10:00 pm. Expect large crowds and increased noise levels in the precinct.
- Sydney Opera House: The 'All About Women' festival is taking place throughout the day. Circular Quay and the Opera House Forecourt will experience significantly higher foot traffic than usual.
Public Consultation: Park and Street Naming
The City of Sydney invites residents to provide feedback on several naming proposals currently under review. Proposals include naming a small park in Camperdown as 'Daranggara Park' and a new road in Alexandria as 'Wiriyagan Place.' Feedback can be submitted via the City of Sydney's 'Have Your Say' portal until the end of the month.
