Heavy Traffic Near Olympic Park and Major Metro Shutdowns This Sunday

Matildas Sellout at Sydney Olympic Park
Commuters and sports fans should prepare for significant congestion around Sydney Olympic Park today, Sunday, 8 March 2026. The Matildas are set to face Korea Republic at Stadium Australia in a final group stage match of the AFC Women’s Asian Cup. With a sellout crowd expected, heavy traffic is anticipated on all major approaches to the precinct, particularly the M4 Motorway, Hill Road, and Australia Avenue.
Transport for NSW has issued a high-priority alert advising fans to leave their cars at home. Travel on all modes of public transport is included in the match-day tickets. To accommodate the crowds, express trains will run frequently between Central Station and Olympic Park, as well as from key western stations. Major event buses will also operate on nine different routes across the city starting from mid-afternoon.
Major Metro and Train Network Disruptions
Traveling across the city will be further complicated today by a full shutdown of the Sydney Metro line. There are no metro services running between Tallawong and Sydenham today as crews conduct essential testing for future network extensions. Replacement buses are operating between Tallawong and Chatswood. Commuters needing to reach the CBD or Sydenham should transfer to train services at Epping or Chatswood stations.
In addition to the Metro closure, trackwork is impacting several rail lines:
- T5 Cumberland Line: Buses are replacing trains between Leppington and Glenfield.
- T8 Airport & South Line: Buses are replacing trains between Glenfield, Sydenham, and Central via the Airport.
- City Circle: Significant maintenance is taking place on the City Circle, with reduced services and diversions in place. Commuters are encouraged to use the light rail or local bus services to navigate the CBD.
International Women’s Day CBD Marches
Motorists should also be aware of planned marches and rallies marking International Women’s Day in the Sydney CBD. A twilight rally and march are scheduled to move through the city center, which may cause rolling road closures and delays for bus services. Expect a higher-than-normal pedestrian presence around Town Hall and along George Street throughout the afternoon and evening.
Roadwork and Motorway Alerts
Maintenance work continues on the Warringah Freeway upgrade, which may lead to narrowed lanes and reduced speed limits. While no full daytime closures are scheduled for the freeway today, drivers should remain alert for changing conditions. Motorists are urged to allow at least 30 to 60 minutes of additional travel time if they are heading toward the Olympic Park precinct or navigating the CBD today.
