Commuter Alert for Tuesday, 10 March 2026

Sydney commuters are facing a mix of scheduled maintenance and significant evening rail closures this Tuesday. While the morning peak is expected to flow relatively normally on most major arteries, disruptions are planned for the evening and late-night periods, particularly for those relying on the T4 Illawarra Line and the Sydney Metro network. Transport for NSW has urged travelers to factor in extra time and check for updates before departing.

Evening Rail and Metro Disruptions

The most substantial impact on public transport today will occur during the evening hours on the T4 Eastern Suburbs & Illawarra Line. Starting tonight, buses will replace trains between Hurstville and Cronulla/Sutherland to allow for essential track maintenance. Passengers traveling to or from the Sutherland Shire are advised that replacement buses may follow a different stopping pattern than regular train services. Commuters should allow at least 30 to 45 minutes of additional travel time to reach their destinations.

In addition to the rail closures, those using the Sydney Metro Northwest and City lines should prepare for reduced service levels. Highlights of the planned disruptions include:

  • Sydney Metro: From 9:10 PM tonight, services between Tallawong and Sydenham will run at a reduced frequency of every 20 minutes. This is part of critical testing ahead of the Southwest extension.
  • Platform Changes: At Victoria Cross and Crows Nest stations, services heading toward Tallawong may depart from different platforms than usual.
  • T4 Illawarra Line: Bus replacements commence in the late evening, affecting all stations between Hurstville and the Cronulla/Sutherland branches.

Major Roadworks and Arterial Delays

Motorists should prepare for several ongoing road projects across the metropolitan area that may impact travel speeds. On the M5 Motorway, maintenance work continues between Heathcote Road in Wattle Grove and the Hume Highway in Casula. While the heaviest construction is focused on overnight shifts, reduced speed limits and narrow lanes remain in place, which can lead to localized congestion during the afternoon peak.

In Western Sydney, resurfacing work on the M7 Motorway is active between Horsley Drive at Horsley Park and Richmond Road at Oakhurst. Drivers should expect intermittent lane closures and are reminded to strictly adhere to the 40km/h speed limits through these zones. Furthermore, new traffic conditions have officially commenced today on St George Crescent at Menai. Local motorists in the Sutherland Shire should be mindful of new signage and road markings as this upgrade project progresses.

Advice for Commuters

With multiple maintenance programs running concurrently, the best approach is to plan your trip well in advance. Commuters are encouraged to utilize digital wayfinding tools for real-time updates on bus replacement schedules and traffic flow. If possible, those traveling on the T4 line tonight should consider leaving earlier or seeking alternative bus routes to avoid the peak of the replacement service window.
