Good Friday Facility and Service Closures

The City of Sydney advises residents and business owners that all administrative offices, including the Town Hall House customer service center, will be closed today, Friday, 3 April 2026, for the Good Friday public holiday. All branches of the City of Sydney Library network, as well as community centers and indoor aquatic facilities, will also remain closed. Domestic waste, recycling, and green waste collections will proceed as regularly scheduled; however, residents are requested to ensure bins are placed on the kerbside by the usual time to allow for early holiday collection rounds. Regular council operations and library services will resume on Tuesday, 7 April, following the conclusion of the Easter long weekend.

Major Transport and Rail Network Disruptions

Transport for NSW has issued a high-level alert for significant disruptions across the rail and metro network this weekend. On Friday, 3 April, the M1 Metro line will be entirely closed between Tallawong and Sydenham to facilitate essential testing for the Southwest extension. Replacement buses are operating between Tallawong and Chatswood, and passengers are advised to use the existing train network for the Epping to City leg of their journey. Additionally, planned trackwork on the T4 Eastern Suburbs & Illawarra Line means buses will replace trains between Central and Bondi Junction, and between Waterfall and Sutherland. All other trains, buses, and ferries are operating on a Sunday/Public Holiday timetable, which includes fewer services than a standard Friday.

Health Advisory: Mosquito-Borne Virus Alert

NSW Health has issued an urgent advisory following the detection of Ross River virus activity in mosquito trappings across Greater Western Sydney. With the surge in outdoor activity expected over the Easter long weekend, health officials are urging the public to take immediate precautions to avoid mosquito bites. Residents and travelers are advised to use repellents containing DEET, picaridin, or oil of lemon eucalyptus, and to wear long, loose-fitting clothing when outdoors, particularly during peak mosquito activity at dawn and dusk. This warning follows recent detections of Barmah Forest virus in inland regions, highlighting an increased seasonal risk for mosquito-borne illnesses.

Special Event Access and Road Restrictions

Significant road closures and special event clearways are currently active to support the Sydney Royal Easter Show at Olympic Park. Special Event Clearways are in effect on Australia Avenue, Showground Road, and Herb Elliott Avenue; vehicles parked in these zones will be towed. For those attending the NRL Good Friday clash between the Bulldogs and Rabbitohs at Accor Stadium, travel on all modes of public transport is included in your match ticket. Motorists should also be aware of night-time closures on the Warringah Freeway, with northbound lanes detoured to the Pacific Highway until 8:00 AM on Saturday.

Restricted Retail Trading Hours

Under the Retail Trading Act 2008, Good Friday is a restricted trading day across New South Wales. All major supermarkets, including Coles, Woolworths, and Aldi, are closed today. Department stores and major shopping centers are also prohibited from trading. Takeaway liquor sales from bottle shops are restricted today by law. Small businesses, petrol stations, and pharmacies may remain open at the discretion of the operator.
