Public Health Alert: Measles Warning

NSW Health has issued a critical advisory for the Sydney and Newcastle regions following confirmed cases of measles. As of Friday, 10 April 2026, residents are urged to monitor for symptoms including high fever, sore eyes, and a cough, followed by a red, blotchy rash. This alert follows a recent surge in cases linked to overseas travel. Health officials recommend that anyone born after 1965 ensure they have received two doses of the MMR vaccine. Exposure locations are being updated regularly on the official health website; individuals who visited listed sites should seek medical advice if symptoms appear.

Mosquito-Borne Disease Advisory

A public health warning remains active for Greater Western Sydney due to the detection of Ross River virus in local mosquito populations. With the Easter long weekend encouraging outdoor activity, the community is advised to take the following precautions:

  • Apply effective insect repellent containing DEET, picaridin, or oil of lemon eucalyptus.
  • Wear long, loose-fitting clothing and covered footwear when outdoors.
  • Reduce mosquito breeding sites by emptying standing water from pots and containers.
  • Be particularly vigilant during dawn and dusk when mosquito activity peaks.

Major Transport Disruptions: M1 Metro Closure

Commuters are advised that the entire M1 Metro line between Tallawong and Sydenham is closed today, Friday, 10 April, to facilitate essential Southwest Metro testing. A comprehensive rail replacement bus service is in operation. Passengers should allow for significantly increased travel time and check the real-time Trip Planner before starting their journey. Additionally, all other Sydney Trains, buses, and ferries are operating on a Sunday/Public Holiday timetable for the Good Friday period.

Roadworks and Infrastructure Updates

The following road notices are currently in effect for the Sydney metropolitan area:

  • Warringah Freeway: Temporary lane and ramp closures are active across the freeway until Monday morning for major upgrade works. Expect significant queuing and delays.
  • Great Western Highway: Victoria Pass (Mitchell's Causeway) remains closed in both directions due to structural defects. Motorists traveling west from Sydney must detour via Bells Line of Road.
  • Fuel Management: Following recent ministerial briefings, drivers are encouraged to purchase only necessary fuel and avoid stockpiling to ensure stable supply levels across the region.

Public Safety and Retail Regulations

In accordance with NSW legislation, major retail outlets including all Woolworths, Coles, and Aldi supermarkets, as well as department stores, are closed today for Good Friday. Licensed premises and small convenience stores may have restricted operating hours. NSW Police have also confirmed that double demerit points are in force from now until midnight Monday, 13 April, covering speeding, mobile phone, seatbelt, and motorcycle helmet offences.
