Easter Monday Travel Outlook

Commuters and holidaymakers should prepare for significant travel disruptions this Monday, 6 April 2026. As the Easter long weekend concludes and the autumn school holidays begin, a combination of heavy return traffic, major roadwork projects, and public transport shutdowns will impact nearly every corner of the Sydney metropolitan area. Transport for NSW has identified today as the busiest period for southbound traffic returning to the city.

Major Road Disruptions and Pinch Points

Motorists using the Warringah Freeway face significant challenges this morning. Major upgrade works have necessitated temporary lane and ramp closures in both directions. While these are scheduled to reopen by 9:00 AM, the morning peak is expected to see heavy queuing and delays through North Sydney, Neutral Bay, and Cammeray. All traffic from the Sydney Harbour Bridge has been detoured to the Pacific Highway throughout the night, and residual congestion will likely linger well into the midday period.

On the major highways, delays of up to 45 minutes are predicted at the following locations:

  • M1 Pacific Motorway: Heavy southbound traffic between Wahroonga and Calga as travelers return from the Central Coast and North Coast.
  • Hume Highway: Significant congestion is expected northbound at Pheasants Nest and Marulan due to resurfacing works and high holiday volume.
  • Princes Highway: Delays are anticipated for those returning from the South Coast, particularly through Milton and Ulladulla.
  • Great Western Highway: Victoria Pass remains closed. All motorists must use the detour via Chifley Road and Darling Causeway, which adds approximately 25 to 30 minutes to the journey.

Sydney Metro and Train Alerts

Public transport users will face a major hurdle as Sydney Metro services remain suspended for the duration of the long weekend. There are no metro services running between Tallawong and Sydenham today, Monday, 6 April. Replacement buses are operating between Tallawong and Chatswood. Commuters are advised to use existing heavy rail services between Epping, Chatswood, the City, and Sydenham, but should allow for significantly increased travel times and crowded platforms.

Sydney Royal Easter Show Impact

The Sydney Royal Easter Show continues at Olympic Park, drawing large crowds. Several local roads in the Olympic Park precinct, including Park Street and Dawn Fraser Avenue, are closed. While Major Event Buses are running frequently from across the city, the high demand coupled with general holiday traffic means those heading to the show should avoid driving. If you must drive, pre-booked parking is essential as all lots are expected to reach capacity early.

Safety and Enforcement

A final reminder for motorists: double demerit points remain in force until midnight tonight. Police are out in high numbers targeting speeding, mobile phone use, and seatbelt offences to ensure a safe return for all travelers. Stay patient and plan for frequent breaks if traveling long distances.
