Significant Road Disruptions: Mount Ousley Closure

Commuters traveling between Sydney and the Illawarra region should prepare for significant delays this Saturday, 7 February 2026. A major closure is in effect on Mount Ousley Road as part of the ongoing interchange upgrade project. The road is closed in both directions between Gaynor Avenue and the M1 Princes Motorway. This closure commenced at 6:00 am today and is scheduled to remain in place until 4:00 am on Monday, 9 February.

Motorists are advised to avoid the area if possible or allow for substantial extra travel time. Detours are in place via Memorial Drive and Masters Road for light vehicles, while heavy vehicles should follow directed routes. Traffic controllers are on-site to assist with the transition, but congestion is expected to build throughout the day, particularly during peak mid-morning and early-afternoon periods.

Sydney Trains and Regional Rail Maintenance

Public transport users will also face a range of service adjustments due to essential maintenance and safety upgrades across the network:

  • Hawkesbury River to Cowan: To improve signal and electrical reliability, maintenance work is being carried out between Hawkesbury River and Cowan from 5:00 am until 11:05 am this morning. While these works are scheduled to conclude before midday, early morning travelers should check for residual delays.
  • South Coast Line: Track maintenance is underway between Helensburgh and Coalcliff. These works began late Friday night and will continue throughout the weekend, affecting some local stopping patterns.
  • Regional NSW TrainLink: Several regional services have been modified. The 07:19 Sydney to Dubbo service will start and end at Strathfield today, operating as a three-car XPLORER set. Additionally, coaches will replace the 06:00 Brisbane to Sydney service between Broadmeadow and Sydney.
  • Southern Services: Travelers heading to Canberra or Melbourne should note that several morning and afternoon services are departing earlier than the standard timetable to accommodate trackwork window shifts.

Commuter Advice for Saturday

While most city-bound services remain operational, the combination of major roadwork at the Mount Ousley interchange and local rail maintenance means that cross-regional travel will be slower than usual. For those driving, ensure your GPS is updated with the latest road closure data to navigate the detours effectively.

If you are using the rail network, please tap on and off with your Opal card as usual and allow at least an additional 30 to 45 minutes for your journey, especially if your route involves regional transfers or the South Coast line. Stay safe and plan ahead to ensure a smooth journey across Sydney today.
