Overview for Sunday, 29 March 2026

Commuters and residents across Sydney are advised to prepare for significant travel disruptions this Sunday, 29 March 2026. A combination of major rail maintenance and extensive roadworks on the Warringah Freeway will result in increased travel times. If you are heading into the CBD or moving between the North Shore and the City, please allow for at least 30 to 45 minutes of additional transit time.

Public Transport and Rail Alerts

The Sydney rail network is undergoing heavy trackwork today, impacting several major lines:

  • City Circle Shutdown: Trains are not running on the City Circle or between Central and Wynyard. For travel to Town Hall, commuters are advised to use Metro services to Gadigal (Town Hall) or the Light Rail. For Wynyard or Circular Quay, please use the L2 or L3 Light Rail services.
  • Sydney Metro (M1): No metro services are running between Macquarie Park and Victoria Cross. Replacement buses are operating between Macquarie University and Victoria Cross. Services continue to run normally between Tallawong and Macquarie Park, and from Victoria Cross to Sydenham.
  • T1 North Shore Line: Buses have replaced trains between Hornsby and Milsons Point. Passengers should change at Victoria Cross for Metro services to the City.
  • T4 Eastern Suburbs & Illawarra Line: Trains are running but will not stop at Town Hall station. Passengers should alight at Central or Martin Place and walk or use the Light Rail to reach Town Hall.
  • T1 Western Line: Trains are running to a modified timetable with some service changes between Ashfield and Central.

Road and Freeway Updates

Motorists will face challenging conditions, particularly in the northern suburbs due to the Warringah Freeway Upgrade:

  • Warringah Freeway: Major weekend work continues until 6:00 PM today. Multiple ramp and lane closures are in effect through North Sydney, Neutral Bay, and Cammeray. While the full southbound closure between Lane Cove Tunnel and Mount Street is scheduled to reopen at 6:00 AM, heavy congestion is expected throughout the day.
  • Mascot: Scheduled roadworks begin today on Wentworth Avenue between General Holmes Drive and Southern Cross Drive. Expect lane closures and reduced speed limits in the area.
  • M7 Motorway: Ongoing integration work for the M7-M12 project may cause minor delays near the Light Horse Interchange.

Major Events

The Run2Cure Sydney fundraiser is taking place today at The Domain and Mrs Macquarie’s Chair. While no major arterial road closures are linked to the event, there will be a significant increase in pedestrian traffic around the Art Gallery of New South Wales and local access roads within the Royal Botanic Garden precinct. Parking in the CBD will be extremely limited.

Commuter Advice

With the City Circle closed and the North Shore rail line replaced by buses, the Sydney Metro and Light Rail networks are the most reliable options for reaching the city center. Drivers are encouraged to use the Pacific Highway as a primary detour for freeway closures and to monitor real-time traffic apps before departing.
