Significant Disruptions Expected for Friday Night Commute

Commuters and late-night motorists in Sydney are advised to prepare for significant disruptions across the road and rail network starting this evening, Friday, 27 March 2026. As part of the ongoing Warringah Freeway Upgrade and essential network maintenance, several major arteries will experience full closures and heavy detours starting as early as 10:00 PM. Authorities are urging motorists to plan ahead and allow for substantial extra travel time.

Warringah Freeway and Harbour Bridge Closures

The most substantial impact tonight will be on the Warringah Freeway and the northern approach to the Sydney CBD. Starting from 10:00 PM, construction crews will begin closing multiple ramps and lanes to facilitate the installation of new electronic signage gantries and road resurfacing. The following impacts are confirmed:

  • Southbound Full Closure: All southbound lanes on the Warringah Freeway between the Lane Cove Tunnel and Mount Street will be closed from 11:00 PM tonight until 6:00 AM Saturday morning.
  • Pacific Highway Detour: Motorists travelling south toward the Sydney Harbour Bridge must exit early and detour via the Pacific Highway. On-ramps at Berry Street and Mount Street will be used to regain access to the bridge.
  • Ramp Closures: Several key access points will be unavailable, including the High Street and Arthur Street ramps, the Mount Street underpass, and the Berry Street northbound on-ramp.
  • Sydney Harbour Tunnel: Southbound tunnel access will be restricted in coordination with the freeway closures. Use the bridge as the primary alternative, but expect delays due to merged traffic and a reduced speed limit of 40km/h in active work zones.

Regional Roads and Major Arteries

For those heading out of Sydney tonight or travelling toward the Southern Highlands, the Hume Highway remains a point of concern. Resurfacing work at Marulan is ongoing 24/7, with contraflow conditions in place. Commuters should factor in an additional 20 to 30 minutes of travel time between Sydney and Goulburn due to these work zones.

Additionally, maintenance work is scheduled for the M4 Western Motorway near Emu Plains. While the heaviest work is concentrated mid-week, motorists should remain alert for shoulder closures and speed reductions in the area during the late-night hours as crews finalize weekly maintenance tasks.

Public Transport and Weekend Outlook

While most major rail disruptions are scheduled to begin early Saturday morning, Friday night commuters should be aware of the following transitions taking place late tonight:

  • T1 North Shore Line: Late-night services will begin transitioning to replacement buses between Hornsby and Milsons Point to prepare for a total weekend shutdown of that section.
  • City Circle: Trains will cease running on the City Circle after midnight, with buses taking over for the early Saturday shifts.
  • Metro M1 Line: No metro services will run between Macquarie Park and Victoria Cross starting early Saturday. Passengers on the final Friday night services should check for any early-onset testing closures that may affect the last few trips of the evening.

Transport for NSW urges all travelers to allow at least 30 to 60 minutes of extra travel time and to consult real-time transport apps before departing.
