Sydney Traffic and Transport Update: Wednesday, 25 March 2026

Commuters across Greater Sydney should prepare for significant disruptions today, particularly those traveling from the Western suburbs and the Central West. A combination of long-term structural repairs and new roadwork projects beginning today will necessitate extra travel time and careful route planning.

Major Arterial Alert: Great Western Highway

The most significant impact remains the total closure of the Great Western Highway at Victoria Pass. Following the discovery of structural instability in the historic Mitchells Causeway, the highway is closed to all traffic in both directions between Mount Victoria and Little Hartley. Transport for NSW has confirmed this closure will persist for at least three months. Commuters are advised to use the following detours:

  • Light Vehicles: Divert via the Darling Causeway and Bells Line of Road. Expect heavy congestion through Mount Victoria.
  • Heavy Vehicles: Must use the Castlereagh Highway and Golden Highway or the Mid-Western Highway, as Bells Line of Road is not a suitable alternative for most freight.

New Roadworks: Seven Hills and Old Windsor Road

Starting today, Wednesday, 25 March, motorists in the Northwest will encounter changed traffic conditions at Seven Hills. Road maintenance and upgrades are commencing on Old Windsor Road and Abbott Road. While much of the heavy work is scheduled for overnight periods, barriers and reduced speed limits may remain in place during the day. Local commuters should allow an additional 10 to 15 minutes during the morning and afternoon peaks.

Public Transport and Rail Services

The rail network is currently operating on a standard weekday timetable with no major daytime trackwork reported for Wednesday. However, commuters on the Central Coast will benefit from a service boost starting this week, with 56 additional bus services extended to support residents in the Crangan Bay area, improving connectivity to the broader transport hub.

For those attending the Biennale of Sydney, which continues across major venues including the Art Gallery of NSW and the Walsh Bay Arts Precinct, public transport remains the most reliable option. Expect increased pedestrian activity around Circular Quay and the CBD foreshore throughout the day.

Evening Commute Outlook: Tunnel Closures

Drivers planning to travel late tonight should be aware of scheduled maintenance closures beginning at 10:00 PM:

  • M4E Tunnel: Both Eastbound and Westbound tubes will close from 10:00 PM tonight until early Thursday morning.
  • Rozelle Interchange: The connection from Iron Cove Bridge and City West Link to the M8 will be closed from 10:00 PM tonight until 5:00 AM Thursday.

Please monitor live updates and signage throughout the day as conditions can change rapidly.
