Sydney Traffic and Commute Update: Wednesday, 4 February 2026

Commuters across the Sydney metropolitan area should prepare for a mix of ongoing road infrastructure projects and significant late-night disruptions to the rail and light rail networks this Wednesday. While the morning peak is expected to follow standard mid-week patterns, those traveling in the evening or utilizing Western Sydney corridors will face specific challenges due to planned maintenance and upgrades.

Major Rail and Light Rail Disruptions

Public transport users are advised of several high-impact nightly closures taking place as part of the Sydney Metro Southwest extension testing and general network maintenance. Key alerts include:

  • Sydney Metro: From 9:50 PM on Wednesday, metro services will not run between Central and Sydenham. This closure is essential for testing the integration of the new Southwest Metro extension. During this period, services will only operate between Tallawong and Martin Place, and between Martin Place and Central. Commuters are advised to use Sydney Trains services to complete their journey between Central and Sydenham.
  • Light Rail (L1, L2, and L3): Maintenance crews will be active on the light rail network. From 8:00 PM until 1:00 AM, services on the L1 Dulwich Hill, L2 Randwick, and L3 Kingsford lines will be impacted. If you are planning an evening commute, consider alternative bus services or walking between CBD stops where feasible.
  • Track Maintenance: Multiple maintenance programs are scheduled to conclude or continue through Wednesday. This includes track work on the Central to Leppington via Glenfield line and the Tempe to Hurstville corridor. While these are primarily overnight works, some early-morning commuters may notice a higher presence of work crews near the tracks.

Roadworks and Arterial Impacts

Motorists, particularly in Western Sydney, should factor in delays caused by long-term infrastructure upgrades. Notable road condition changes for Wednesday include:

  • Mulgoa Road Upgrade: Stage 2 works continue on Mulgoa Road. Commuters should be aware of a temporary bus stop closure affecting routes 795 and 797, with passengers directed to nearby alternative stops. Increased heavy vehicle traffic is expected around the work site throughout the day.
  • Riverstone Diversions: Roadworks on Clarke Street in Riverstone remain active. Route 742 bus services are currently diverted and will continue to miss scheduled stops until the project reaches its next phase in March.
  • Liverpool to Ingleburn Corridor: Significant track and roadside maintenance is scheduled between Liverpool and Ingleburn. Drivers on parallel roads should stay alert for changed traffic conditions and localized speed reductions.

Bus Service Adjustments

As the new school term is now in full swing, commuters are reminded that several school bus service changes introduced in late January remain in effect. These adjustments aim to improve reliability across the network but may mean your regular bus route has a slightly different timetable or stop configuration. In South East Sydney, some routes have been modified to avoid Barker Street, opting instead for Avoca Street to improve safety during peak hours.

For the smoothest commute, residents are encouraged to leave early and check real-time digital displays at stations for the most current service intervals.
