Holiday Traffic Inbound: Major Arteries Braced for Busy Wednesday Commute

Holiday Travel Commences Across Major Arteries
Sydney commuters and those heading out of the city are advised to prepare for a significant increase in traffic volumes starting today, Wednesday, 1 April 2026. Live Traffic NSW has issued a formal alert for expected holiday traffic across several key corridors. Significant delays are anticipated on the M1 Pacific Motorway between Wahroonga and Calga, as well as the Pacific Highway through the Hunter region and the Princes Highway on the South Coast. Motorists should allow substantial extra travel time, particularly during the mid-morning and afternoon peaks.
Western Sydney Road Updates
In a win for Western Sydney drivers, the first 7.5-kilometre stretch of the newly constructed third lane on the Westlink M7 is now officially open to traffic. Southbound lanes between Richmond Road and the Light Horse Interchange are now accessible, providing much-needed relief for those travelling through the M7/M4 corridor. However, local disruptions continue in Lidcombe, where the M4 off-ramp at Hill Road remains subject to temporary out-of-hours closures through to the end of today as part of the ongoing Housing Acceleration Fund upgrades. Drivers are encouraged to use Parramatta Road as an alternative route where necessary.
Sydney Metro and Rail Adjustments
Commuters using the Sydney Metro network face nightly disruptions this week. From 9:50 PM tonight, metro services will not run between Central and Sydenham to facilitate essential testing for the Southwest Metro extension. Services will continue to operate between Tallawong and Martin Place, and between Martin Place and Central. Passengers requiring travel between Central and Sydenham during the late-night period are advised to use Sydney Trains services. Additionally, NSW TrainLink has confirmed that coaches will replace XPT rail services today for passengers travelling between Sydney and regional hubs including Moree and Armidale.
Ferry and Maritime Changes
Ferry commuters should be aware of ongoing changes at Circular Quay. The Manly Fast Ferry is continuing to operate from Wharf 6 instead of Wharf 2 due to extensive maintenance that is not expected to conclude until mid-year. This change includes a reduced peak-hour frequency of three departures per hour. On a positive note, as of this week, the F10 Blackwattle Bay Ferry service has been fully integrated into the Opal network, providing a streamlined ticketing experience for those commuting between Blackwattle Bay, Pirrama Park, and Barangaroo.
- Check the Live Traffic NSW app for real-time updates on the M1 and M2.
- Plan ahead for nightly Metro closures beginning at 9:50 PM.
- Allow extra time for Manly Fast Ferry queues at Wharf 6.
