Sydney Metro: Southwest Testing and Nightly Closures

The City of Sydney and Transport for NSW advise residents and commuters of essential testing on the Sydney Metro M1 line as part of the Southwest extension project. Following a major testing window over the Easter long weekend, further overnight closures are scheduled to begin this evening, Tuesday, 7 April 2026.

From 9:50 pm tonight, metro services will not operate between Central and Sydenham stations. During this period, metro services will continue to run between Tallawong and Martin Place, and between Martin Place and Central only. Commuters traveling between Central and Sydenham are advised to use existing Sydney Trains services to complete their journeys. This work is a critical phase of the testing program required to safely connect the new Southwest Metro ahead of its scheduled opening in the second half of 2026.

Transport Alert: Sydney Royal Easter Show Traffic

As the 2026 Sydney Royal Easter Show continues at the Sydney Showground, significant traffic management remains in place around the Sydney Olympic Park precinct. Today, Tuesday, 7 April, is expected to see high attendance following the conclusion of the public holiday period. Commuters should be aware that P5 and P6 car parks remain closed to accommodate event infrastructure.

The public is strongly encouraged to utilize public transport, as show tickets include travel on rail, bus, and light rail services. For those driving, pre-booked parking is essential as on-site spaces are expected to reach capacity by mid-morning. Motorists should anticipate heavier-than-usual traffic on the M4, Parramatta Road, and Homebush Bay Drive throughout the day.

NSW Health: 2026 Influenza Vaccination Program

NSW Health has officially launched the 2026 Seasonal Influenza Vaccination Program. Starting this month, free influenza vaccines are available to eligible residents under the National Immunisation Program (NIP), including children aged six months to five years, pregnant women, and those aged 65 and over.

A notable update for 2026 is the introduction of the intranasal influenza vaccination program for children aged two to five years. This needle-free option is available through GP clinics and state-based immunization centers. Health officials recommend that residents receive their annual vaccination as soon as possible to ensure maximum protection before the onset of the peak winter flu season.

City Services: Post-Easter Waste Collection

The City of Sydney confirms that residential waste, recycling, and green waste collection services are operating on a business-as-usual schedule today. Despite the recent public holidays, the City's waste collection teams work through the holiday period to maintain standard service levels. Residents are reminded to place their bins on the kerbside the night before their scheduled collection day and to ensure lids are fully closed to prevent pests and litter dispersion.

Public Exhibition: Local Infrastructure and Naming

The City of Sydney invites public feedback on several ongoing proposals currently on exhibition. This includes the proposed naming of a new public space at 180 George Street as 'Ngana gili Plaza' and the naming of a small park in Camperdown as 'Daranggara Park.' Residents can review these proposals and submit comments via the City's official website until the close of the exhibition period later this month.
