Public Service Announcement: Regional and City Transit Impacts

Authorities have issued a major travel advisory for the Greater Sydney region following the ongoing closure of the Great Western Highway at Mount Victoria. Due to significant structural instability discovered in a section of the road dating back nearly 200 years, the highway is expected to remain closed for several months. Freight and commuter traffic between Sydney and the Central West are advised to seek alternative routes and allow for substantial delays.

Locally, the following road closures and traffic conditions are active today, Thursday, 19 March 2026:

  • Camden John Street: Full closure between Mitchell Street and Exeter Street for the Camden Show, effective from Thursday morning through Saturday.
  • Sydney Olympic Park: Increased traffic and precinct-wide road adjustments remain in place for the AFC Women’s Asian Cup matches. Residents should anticipate heavy congestion near Stadium Australia and Homebush Bay Drive.
  • Sydney Metro M1 Integration: While standard weekday services are running, passengers are reminded of upcoming full-line closures this weekend for critical Southwest conversion testing.

NSW Health Advisory: Measles and Vaccination Updates

NSW Health is urging the public to remain vigilant following an updated alert regarding increased measles activity across Sydney. Multiple exposure sites have been identified, including several Sydney Trains lines (T1 and T2). Symptoms to monitor include fever, sore eyes, and a cough, followed by a blotchy red rash. Residents who are unsure of their vaccination status are encouraged to visit a GP for the MMR vaccine.

Additionally, free access to the Japanese Encephalitis vaccine has been expanded this week. This initiative specifically targets individuals planning outdoor recreation in high-risk local government areas, following the detection of the virus in the current mosquito season.

Official Council Governance and Planning Meetings

The City of Sydney has scheduled two significant public forums today at Sydney Town Hall. These meetings are open to the public for observation:

  • Local Pedestrian, Cycling, Traffic Calming and Transport Forum: Meeting at 10:00 am in the Council Chamber to discuss local infrastructure improvements and safety measures.
  • Central Sydney Planning Committee: Meeting at 5:00 pm to review major development applications and urban planning strategies for the city center.

Community Notices: New Building Standards and Major Events

The City of Sydney reminds developers and property owners that new building controls are now in effect for 2026. All new residential and commercial developments are required to operate as all-electric facilities, restricting the installation of new gas appliances as part of the city's commitment to energy efficiency and emissions reduction.

For those visiting the city, today marks the continuation of the 25th Biennale of Sydney, 'Rememory,' with free exhibitions open at White Bay Power Station and the Art Gallery of NSW. Additionally, the MindBodySpirit Festival and the Accounting & Business Expo are currently underway at the International Convention Centre (ICC) Sydney.
