State Government Launches Whole-of-Government Response to Highway Closure

The New South Wales Government is taking a critical step today, Friday, 20 March 2026, as it convenes the first session of the newly established Great Western Highway Community Coordination Taskforce. This whole-of-government initiative, launched by the Minns Labor Government, aims to address the severe and ongoing disruptions caused by the closure of the Great Western Highway at Mitchell’s Causeway. The road remains shut following a serious geotechnical failure that has severed a primary transport artery between Sydney and the Central West.

Chaired jointly by the NSW Reconstruction Authority and Transport for NSW, today’s inaugural meeting brings together representatives from state agencies, local councils, industry bodies, and community stakeholders. The taskforce is designed to serve as a single point of contact for those affected by the closure, ensuring that the government's response is informed by the immediate needs of residents and businesses. The meeting will focus on streamlining support services and coordinating a regional recovery strategy that extends beyond mere infrastructure repairs.

Addressing Infrastructure and Safety Concerns

The primary focus of today’s session is the assessment of the geotechnical instability at the site. Transport for NSW has reported continued cracking and movement at Mitchell’s Causeway, necessitating a cautious, safety-led approach to any potential reopening. Officials are expected to discuss the results of recent testing and monitoring, as well as the progress of detours and alternative public transport options. The government has already introduced extra rail and coach services to support affected commuters and students, but today’s discussions will examine if further transport adjustments are required as the closure persists.

Coordinating Economic and Tourism Support

The taskforce will also evaluate the economic fallout of the highway closure, particularly regarding the tourism and freight sectors. Minister for Jobs and Tourism Steve Kamper noted that Destination NSW is actively working with local councils and tourism bodies in the Blue Mountains and Central West to identify support opportunities. Agenda items for today include the development of a regional tourism and communications strategy aimed at reassuring visitors that these regions remain "open for business" despite the transport hurdles.

By bringing the NSW Reconstruction Authority into a leadership role, the government hopes to leverage their specialized experience in large-scale recovery efforts. The taskforce is committed to providing regular updates to the public as investigations continue at the site, with today’s meeting marking the beginning of a more integrated and transparent recovery phase for the region.
